Having done away with the sugar-laden cupcakes and delicate flutes of Champagne, the Athenaeum Hotel & Residences has plumped for an afternoon tea spread with substance. Under the guidance of two Michelin-star chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin, the recently launched Gentleman’s Tea is all about hearty flavours. Traditional sandwiches sit alongside wholesome delights such as Goosnargh duck Scotch egg and a cheese scone with Alsace bacon butter, while a solo, current-packed Eccles cake provides all the sweetness needed. An impressive selection of artisan teas – think Dragon Pearl Jasmine and Sencha Fukujya – are available, but a dram of the Athenaeum’s own blended Scotch whisky is an admirable accompaniment.
